Senior Programs

Overview

We have 2 programs to make the T more affordable for older riders:

  • The Senior CharlieCard gives riders 65 and over roughly 50% off one-way fares and passes on the subway, bus, Commuter Rail, ferry, and The RIDE.
  • The Car-Free Seniors CharlieCard gives riders 75 and over who don't hold driver's licenses free rides on the subway, bus, Commuter Rail, and ferry. It also gives riders 50% off trips on The RIDE.

Once approved, you'll need to renew your benefits every eight years.

Eligibility

To be approved for a Senior CharlieCard program, you’ll enter the information from your ID. We’ll verify that your age qualifies you for reduced fare benefits.

Senior CharlieCard: for riders 65 and older

Requires a government-issued photo ID such as:

  • a driver's license
  • a passport
  • an RMV-issued state ID such as a Mass ID card or Liquor ID

You can apply with an expired ID as long as the expiration date is within the last three years.

Car-Free Seniors CharlieCard: for riders 75 and older who do not drive

Requires an active RMV-issued Massachusetts ID card that reads “Identification Card” across the top.

If you meet both the age and ID requirements, you can be enrolled in the Car-Free Seniors CharlieCard program.

We cannot accept IDs without a photo.

Note: Driver's licenses are not accepted for the Car-Free Seniors CharlieCard program. Riders 75 and older with driver's licenses will be considered for the standard Senior CharlieCard. Learn more about the Mass ID
